Although type 2 diabetes is often considered progressive, remission—traditionally defined as HbA1c <6.5% without therapy—can be achieved through lifestyle change, early insulin use, or bariatric surgery. New glucose- and weight-lowering therapies achieve similar or better glycemic control with comparable mechanisms, supporting consideration of a revised, benefit-based definition of remission
About the Speaker
Stefano Del Prato, MD, is Professor Emeritus of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pisa School of Medicine and former Chief of Diabetes at the University Hospital of Pisa. He is currently Affiliate Professor at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and Affiliate Physician at the Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio. Trained in Endocrinology and Internal Medicine, he has also served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas, San Antonio. His research focuses on type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. A former President of EASD and EFSD Chair, he has authored over 590 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous international honors, including Commander of the Order of the Italian Republic for
Scientific Merit.

This presentation shows how real-world data–based outcomes research can be integrated into these upstream processes to support earlier, more targeted, and proactive care.
About the Speaker
Piaopiao Li earned her PhD in Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics from the University of Florida in December 2025 and is currently an Instructor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at Emory University, an affiliated VA researcher, and a member of the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center. She has published as first author in leading journals including JAMA, Diabetes Care, JAMA Network Open, and JAMIA, and has received multiple early-career awards, with her work featured across major medical media outlets.
